The COVID-19 pandemic and systemic racism continue to place extraordinary stress on our newest families. Pregnant and postpartum parents who completed Nurture’s 2021 COVID-19 Survey identified mental health support, lactation support, and social connection as their top three needs across all demographics. To answer their call, Nurture:

  • Launched the Perinatal Resource Mapping Project (PRMP), the first ever initiative to identify Greater Richmond’s lactation, perinatal mental health, and doula support providers and measure how provider demographics represent our birthing community. The PRMP is a foundational step toward a comprehensive Perinatal Resource Directory that will help parents easily identify and access necessary supports.
  • Piloted a virtual lactation support program for Black and Brown parents, led by five women of color who participated in The B.L.A.C.K. Course, a 45 hour full scope lactation education course made by and for Black People.
  • Provided Collective Impact training for perinatal health stakeholders to help support a better networked perinatal health ecosystem.
  • Collaborated with Postpartum Support Virginia to offer training in Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders for Lactation Support Providers.
  • Led a multi-organizational Call to Action to Protect Chest/Breastfeeding that was signed by over 175 area businesses, organizations, government agencies, legislators, and individuals.

Help us raise $2500 $5000 by December 31 to sustain and grow these critical support, education, and advocacy initiatives.
